The human version (we wrote this, not the council)
This policy supports development that complies with local Design Codes, which set clear design frameworks so that proposals meeting their parameters can be approved. Applicants must show how they have met the relevant code's expectations. Codes are not meant to stifle creativity, so departures are possible, but they must be fully justified, judged on their merits, and still achieve the good design principles in Policy DS.18. Where no local code exists, the National Design Guide applies.

what is required in each instance, and these requirements will be proportionate and
reasonable. This policy is based upon principles set out in the National Design Guide.
Policy DS.19
Design Codes
Development proposals that comply with all relevant local Design Codes will be
supported and must provide sufficient information to clearly demonstrate how design
expectations of relevant Design Codes have been met.
The purpose of a Design Code is to set out a clear design framework so that proposals
that accord with its parameters can be approved. Design Codes are not intended to
stifle innovation or creativity and there may be instances where proposals come
forward that are not consistent with the Design Code. In such circumstances,
proposals must still adhere to the principles of good design as set out in Policy DS.18
and be of high quality. Departures from the Design Code must be fully justified and
will be considered on their own merits.

Policy Justification
2.12.14 The South Warwickshire Local Plan will be supported by a range of Design
Codes. Where such a code exists, the code must be used to guide the design of
proposals. In some locations, more than one code may apply covering different
geographies – for example an area-wide code and a site-specific code may both apply.
2.12.15 In the absence of a specific local design code, the National Design Guide
applies: https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/602cef1d8fa8f5038595091b/N

2.12.16 The information required to demonstrate compliance with Design Codes will
vary depending on the type and scale of development proposed. Early engagement with
the Development Management team is encouraged to understand what is required in
each instance, and these requirements will be proportionate and reasonable.
Policy DS.20
Densification and Advanced Methods of Construction
A. Promoting Densification
In accordance with Policies DS.18 and DS.19, development proposals should make
the most effective use of land by seeking to maximise site densities across South
Warwickshire. Higher densities are particularly encouraged within the existing Built-
up Areas of the Main Urban Areas, Main Service Centres and Local Service Centres,
as set out in Policy DS.8.
