The human version

This section introduces the plan's approach to accommodation for Gypsies, Travellers and Travelling Showpeople. National policy requires the housing needs of these groups to be assessed and planned for. The council will meet identified needs on suitable sites in sustainable locations and maintain a five-year supply of pitches and plots, guided by its Gypsy and Traveller Accommodation Assessment of July 2025. Existing sites will be safeguarded while need remains, and needs will be met through a mix of safeguarding, extending existing sites and allocating new ones.

An unofficial plain English summary. The official wording below is what counts at examination; check it before you rely on anything here.

What the plan says

The text below is extracted automatically from the official PDF and may contain artefacts; the PDF is authoritative.

3 Gypsies, Travellers and Travelling Showpeople 3.1 National Policy sets out that within the context of establishing need (housing), the size, type and tenure of housing needed for different groups in the community should be assessed and reflected in planning policies and specifically refers to travellers as one of these groups. 3.2 The council will seek to meet identified needs on suitable sites in sustainable locations and to maintain a five -year supply of deliverable pitches/plots taking into account the findings of the council’s Gypsy and Traveller Accommodation Assessment (July 2 025) and any subsequent updates. All the identified Gypsy, Traveller and Travelling Showpeople sites /yards within the district will be ‘safeguarded’ to ensure that the permitted use as a traveller site is not lost through the grant of any subsequent planni ng permission whilst there remains a need for sites. 3.3 There are a range of different methods to meet identified need, and often a combination of methods is often most effective. The approaches can be categorised as a criteria -based policy approach, extension of existing sites /yards, allocating entirely new gypsy and traveller sites/travelling showpeople yards, or allocating parts of strategic general needs housing sites. A combination of approaches will be utilised in order to meet the need identified

Tips for a response that counts

One focused page beats ten rambling ones. Read the full guide to consultations

  1. Submit a formal representation. This is the only response that must be considered at the plan’s independent examination. The emails below are worth sending too, but they do not count as representations. Open the official response portal

This portal is one form for the whole plan, and it asks which policy or site allocation you are commenting on. Quote the policy reference and page numbers shown here in your answer so your point is logged against the right part.

Write your comments before you open the portal: a notes app, an email draft or paper all work. Paste each one in and keep a copy. Ticking policies as you read builds the draft for you on the My response page.

  2. Email your ward councillors. They voted on this plan and represent you. The draft raises the consultation window and the missing costs.
